Why the Jet's kicker competition is so fucking important.

Since the Sanchez era began in 2009 the New York Jets have played 48 regular season games and 6 Playoff games. Of those 54 total games played 21 games have been decided by 6 points or less. That is 38.8% of the games over the past three years have been decided by 2 field goals or less. In the NFL today a win here or a loss there is the difference between the playoffs and early tee times.

It has been a very long time since the Jets have had a consistent kicker on their roster. Jay Feely leads the Jets in regards to fantasy points averaging 7.52 points a game over his 31 game career with the team. Mike Nugent ended up being a waste of a 2nd round pick that never panned out. John Hall was the last kicker in my mind who was a threat throughout the season. Although that may only be because he was the only kicker who could throw his body around.

So that leads us to the current competition between current incumbent Nick "weird head" Folk and Josh "$$" Brown. Folk had his moments last year but was as inconsistent as a NY Jets Kicker can be. Josh Brown has a 81% kicker percentage vs Folk who has 78%. We have 4 weeks to see how this pans out and I welcome the competition and to be honest hope that Josh Brown beats out Folk. The Jets need consistency. Unless Folk has decides to wear his big kid pants this year, I think its time to look in a new direction. Because no matter how well they play you know its going to come down to the 4th Quarter, down by 3, 0:03 on the clock and we have a 48 yard kick to send it to OT.
